A great video I discovered on another Japan-themed blog recently. Three fascinating deep sea creatures strutting their stuff; the Firefly Squid (arguably Japan’s most recognisable bioluminescent organism), some dinoflagellates (glow-in-the-dark plankton) and the rainbow-like comb-jelly, which looks more like a circus merry-go-round in the dark than a deep-sea lifeform!

Ever wondered why the sky and ocean are blue? But why is water near the coast usually green? And how about animals in the deep, black depths of the sea - what colour are they? Read below for a very basic introduction to bioluminescence, colour and light in the deep sea and find out the answers to these questions. I wrote it during my first year for an elective module in the Colour Science department. Hopefully it’s not written too badly… ^^;.

Known as ‘the Angels of the Sea’, these squishy little creatures captured my imagination while travelling around Hokkaido in the final weeks of my year abroad in Japan. Out in Hokkaido they have taken on minor celebrity status with items such as the ubiquitous Hello Kitty line of key chains Japanising this small shell-less snail into a cute fashion accessory. Though they don’t actually have any bioluminesence of their own, they are captivating creatures in their own right.

Finally after two years, several false starts and a blank homepage, I’ve dug myself out the time to properly customise and set up Wordpress on my web space. I used WPDesigner’s (aka Small Potato) ‘Peaceful Rush’ theme and then threw myself into the thick of it, tweaking the code and redesigning the entire layout. A big thank you to him for an easy-to-work-with template and great design sense to get me started.
